Osteopathy is a non-invasive hands-on manual therapy that investigates and treats the underlying causes of pain. Osteopaths are trained to assess, diagnose and treat many health conditions, to help you heal without the need for drugs or surgery.
Osteopaths use a range of techniques to increase the blood flow to your muscles, improve mobility and flexibility and reduce pain and inflammation. Techniques used include:
- Skilled manipulation of the spine and joints
- Massage
- Kinesio taping (also known as sports taping)
- Stretching
- Medical acupuncture
Osteopaths also provide advice on posture and recommend exercises to aid recovery and prevent pain from returning.
Osteopaths are trained to identify signs of more serious conditions that may require you to see your GP or go to hospital. They can also write referral letters to your GP to recommend further tests are carried out to investigate the cause of your pain and rule out more serious conditions (e.g. MRI scan).

How long will recovery take?
The majority of my patients see a noticeable improvement after their first treatment. On average my patients achieve full recovery within 6-8 weeks and will have attended around 6 sessions of hands-on treatment during this time.
The actual time it will take you to recover, will depend on the severity of your condition, how long you have been in pain and factors such as your age and overall health. Some people only require 1 or 2 sessions, others require treatment over a number of months.
During your initial consultation I will carry out a full assessment and explain the recommended treatment plan and how long it will likely take you to recover.
